Description
Hill House is an early to mid-18th century house, possibly incorporating an earlier structure, with 19th-century alterations. It is located on the east side of Staplehurst High Street. The house is constructed of buffish-red brick in a header bond, with red brick quoins and dressings. Chequered red and grey brick is used at the left gable end. The roof is tiled, with a hipped section to the left and a half-hipped section to the right, the latter featuring a moulded strip along the soffit. A multiple brick stack is located towards the right end and a rear stack to the left. There is a dormer to the left hip, corniced at the top. The house has a chamfered brick plinth, a plat band broken over the door and towards each gable end, and a moulded wooden eaves cornice. A window bay on the right end is slightly recessed, with a deeper cornice soffit. The fenestration is irregular, featuring six 2-pane sash windows in open boxes; five have splayed rubbed brick voussoirs, and the sixth, in the recessed right bay, has a segmental head. Similar windows are present on the ground floor. The front door is made of six fielded panels with a flat hood under the third window from the left. Leading to the front door are four stone steps, set on a brick base and featuring a decorative iron balustrade. A rear wing to the left is characterised by a chequered red and grey brick ground floor and tile-hung first floor, topped with a plain tile roof. The interior has not been inspected.
