Description
The King's Head Hotel is a public house that dates back to the 16th century, with alterations made in 1671, the 18th century, and the 19th century. It features a timber-framed structure, with the main range rendered and the ground floor of the front wing finished in chequered red brick from the 18th or 19th century. The first floor is adorned with banded plain and fishscale tiles, and the gable has applied framing. The left return elevation displays late 17th-century red and grey brick in English and Flemish bond. There is a weatherboarded addition at the rear of the wing, which sits above a brick base.
The main range consists of about two timber-framed bays, with a cross-wing of similar size that projects slightly to the left. The building has two storeys and a cellar, with a coursed stone plinth on the cross-wing and a painted brick plinth on the main range. The cross-wing features underbuilt jetties on the front and left return sides. The roof of the main range is hipped to the right, with a gablet and a hip returning to the right. A slender red and grey brick stack is located on the left side of the wing, while another brick stack is positioned on the front slope of the roof to the left of the centre of the main range. There is also a multiple red and grey brick ridge stack towards the centre of the rear addition.
The building has irregular fenestration, including two 16-pane sash windows—one in the wing and one towards the right end of the main range. The ground floor of the wing features two 12-pane sashes, one 16-pane sash beneath the stack, and a tripartite sash towards the right end. Access is provided by half-glazed double doors that lead up four steps with an iron handrail at the left end of the main range, and another half-glazed door that leads up five steps with a pair of iron rails at the right end. A short gabled rear wing is located to the right of the main range, with the date "G E A 1671" inscribed in brick on the left side of the wing.
The interior has only been partially inspected, but it features exposed framing on the ground floor and evidence of subdivision in the wing, along with moulded beams in the main range.
