Description

43-44 Market Place in Boston is a Grade II listed building constructed from stucco and red brick, featuring stucco dressings and quoins. The roof is shallow pitched and covered in Welsh slate, with two gable stacks made of Gault brick.

The building has an L-shaped plan, with a rear wing that extends the full length of the plot. It is part of a terrace of houses with shop fronts facing the Market Place, dating from the 18th to 19th centuries. The structure has three storeys and a four-bay front, highlighted by a moulded eaves cornice supported by paired brackets. The 20th-century shop front includes a brick stallriser and a display window made up of three large panes with transom lights, along with a glazed door on the right. This front is flanked by fluted pilasters and features a plain fascia held up by brackets.

On the first floor, there are four two-over-two pane sash windows, while the second floor has a central blank shaped stucco panel, flanked by smaller two-over-two pane sashes. The openings are adorned with rusticated lintels that include keystones. The early 18th-century rear wing is made of red brick and showcases a tumbled gable, a brick band, and dog-toothed eaves. It also features a flat-headed dormer on the south side and three windows with gauged brick arches; one window is blocked, while the other two contain two-over-two pane sashes.

Internally, the building has undergone significant alterations and does not appear to retain any original joinery or decorative elements from earlier phases, although some cornicing may still exist behind the inserted ceilings. The layout has been remodeled in the 20th century to accommodate a restaurant and kitchen on the ground floor, a shop and bar on the first floor, and domestic accommodation on the second floor.
