Description

Boston Grammar School is a building that originally served as a schoolroom, now functioning as a school, library, and gateway. It was established in 1567, with additions made in 1856 and 1866, along with other 19th-century alterations. The structure is made of red brick, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings, and has a fishscale tile roof with stone-coped gables topped with finials.

The exterior consists of a single storey with a five-bay front, flanked by three-bay 19th-century wings, the northern wing having gables. There is a stone plinth at the base. The central feature is a canted bay window with three lights and a stone embattled parapet. This bay window is flanked by pairs of three-light windows, all equipped with narrow chamfered stone mullions, leaded lights, and hood moulds, with the bay windows also having transoms.

To the south, there is a three-bay wing that includes an external stack, a central six-panel door set within a four-centre arched stone doorway, and flanked by three-light stone mullioned windows. Above the door, there is an inscribed panel that reads 'This wing erected MD CCCLVI'. The northern wing has a similar door and window arrangement, featuring a moulded parapet with a scrolled panel indicating the date of 1866. Behind this is a gable with a four-light mullioned window and a hood, along with an inscription panel above. Additionally, there is a 'Tudor' gateway adjoining the building, set within a brick wall that has moulded stone coping.

The interior has not been inspected. The building was erected as a Free Grammar School.
