Description

No. 16, Pen Street is an early 19th-century house with a 20th-century extension. It is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a hipped pantile roof, a lion’s head gutter, a single ridge, and a tall gable stack.

The exterior is two storeys and three bays. The front features a centrally positioned six-panel door with a narrow overlight, set within a plain timber doorcase that has a moulded hood supported on scrolled console brackets. Flanking the door are single sash windows. Above, the first floor has two similar windows. All windows are topped with segmental rubbed brick arches. The side elevation has a single original window of the same style on each floor.

Internally, a contemporary fluted fireplace is retained. The building is included on the list for its contribution to the group value of Nos. 2, 4, and 6 Grove Street West.
