Description
The milestone outside 96 Leicester Road in New Packington is a historic marker on the former Ashby to Leicester turnpike road, likely dating from the 18th century, with a cast-iron plate added in the 19th century.
It is made of stone and features a cast-iron plate, both of which are painted white. The milestone is located on the south side of Leicester Road and consists of a stone slab with a rounded top. The cast-iron plate has raised lettering painted black, which reads: "TO ASHBY DELAZOUCH 1 TO LEICESTER 16." Additionally, a triangulation benchmark is inscribed into the face of the milestone below the plate and is also highlighted in black paint.
