Description
The milestone near the junction of Leek Road and Queen Street in Cheadle dates from the mid-18th century and features an early 19th-century cast iron name plate attached to its front. The milestone is made of dressed stone with a rounded top, and the plate is inscribed with "LEEK 10 UTTOXETER 10." The lettering and border of the plate are painted black, while the rest of the plate is white.
This milestone is believed to have been erected in the 1760s as part of a series marking the turnpike route from Wetley Rocks through Cheadle and Tean to Rochester. The name plate is thought to have been added in the 1820s, and by 1840, the stone was included in the consolidated Cheadle turnpike.
The milestone is designated as a Grade II listed structure because it is a well-preserved example of a mid-18th-century milestone with an early 19th-century plate. It illustrates the expansion of the road network and the effects of the 1773 general Turnpike Act, which mandated the recording of mileage. This milestone is part of a group of 18th-century milestones with early 19th-century plates that mark the turnpike between Wetley Rocks and Cheadle.
