Description
The Bogey Hole is a former ice-house that has been converted into a grotto, dating from the 18th century and altered in 1885. It is situated as an earth mound with a rockery, covering a domed round chamber with rendered and whitewashed inner walls. The walls flanking the arched entrance on the north side are made of brick and were repointed in the 20th century. There is a blocked hexagonal top vent, and a former drain that has since been floored over. Inside, it contains a painted statue of a Chinese or Japanese mythical beast, which stands on a whitewashed square plinth featuring vermiculated panels. Above the inner entrance arch, there is a painted oriental mask, continuing the theme of the Chinese garden to the north.
