Description

Donisthorpe War Memorial Gateway is a First World War memorial with additions commemorating the Second World War. It is located on the south side of Church Street and features square red brick piers and wrought-iron gates, flanked by smaller wrought-iron supports. The adjoining brick walls are not included in this listing.

The gateway's piers have deeply moulded caps topped with elaborate wrought-iron mountings that support an overhead structure inscribed with the words "WHO DIES IF ENGLAND LIVES / IN MEMORIAM."

On the left gate pier, a bronze plaque honors the men of the parish who died in the First World War, stating: "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE / MEN OF THIS PARISH / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR US / IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918 / 'GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS'." The right gate pier features another plaque with a similar dedication, which reads: "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE / MEN OF THIS PARISH / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR US / IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918 / 'THEY WERE AS A WALL UNTO US / BOTH BY DAY AND NIGHT' / 'AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN / AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL / REMEMBER THEM." Beneath each plaque are the names of the fallen, listed alphabetically by rank.

Above each of these plaques are two smaller plaques that commemorate the local men who died in the Second World War, stating: "IN MEMORY OF THOSE / OF THE PARISH WHO / GAVE THEIR LIVES IN / THE SECOND WORLD WAR / 1939 - 1945 / [NAMES] / RIP."
