Description

The Church of St John the Evangelist, built in 1838, features fine ashlar blocks marked by tool marks and has a slate roof. It is designed in the 'Lancet' style, with a west tower comprising three stages, a broad nave with six windows, and a shallow altar chapel. The church has buttresses between hooded lancets and overall stepped angle buttresses. The buttresses on the nave and chapel create ogee turret heads with foliage finials, although the finials on the chapel are missing. The west door has a drop arch, with a lancet window above it, various slits, lancet bell-openings, and battlements.

Inside, the church has plastered walls and roof, with painted trusses and some braces that form drop and four-centred arches. There is likely a contemporary west gallery with an arcaded front and a font. Original box pews are located on either side of the nave, with central open pews and slightly later choir stalls. The mid-19th century pulpit was enlarged in 1897. The last bay of the nave leads to a raised chancel with a wide drop arch and altar chapel. The east end features three lancet windows divided by two columns, with stained glass dating from around 1920 by Jones and Willis. A plaque from 1938 commemorates the church's centenary.
