Description
Engine House Cottage is a building that dates back to 1805. Originally an engine house, it has now been converted into a cottage. The structure is made of red brick and features brick dentilled eaves, cambered lintels, and a plain tile roof with an end stack on the facing gable and an additional stack on the outshut to the right. The building has two storeys and an attic.
The gable facing has a blocked door, a two-light casement window, and a blocked arched opening in the gable, which has two cross beams in the brickwork beneath. The left side of the cottage features a nine-pane window below and a three-light casement window above, along with a blocked door on the first floor. At the rear, there is a door beneath a larger blocked arch and an attic casement window. There are later outshuts to the right that include casement windows and a door.
This building was constructed in 1805 to house a beam pumping engine for a local colliery and was converted into a workers' hostel in the later 19th century. It retains original features such as the spring beam and bob wall.
