Description
No. 25 Hall Gate is a house dating from the 15th to 16th century, with alterations and extensions from the 17th century, part of it rebuilt in the 19th century, and some early 20th-century modifications. The exterior is roughcast, mostly over brick, featuring brick coped gables, a thatched roof, and brick chimneys at the far end center, both with rebuilt shafts. The building has one storey and an attic, comprising three bays. The gable end facing the road has three-light horizontal sash windows. On the left side, there are two three-light barred wooden casements on the ground floor and a small single light window in the thatch to the left. The right side has irregular wooden casements, a central boarded door leading into a 20th-century wooden lean-to, and an early 20th-century rendered lean-to to the left. There is a later outbuilding extension attached to the far end.
Inside, the house features two complete cruck trusses flanking the far bay, a 17th-century post frame between the near bays, and timber framing in the wall between the house and the lean-to extensions. The far bay also contains a 17th-century floor with a deeply chamfered spine beam that has moulded stops, and a 17th-century chimney with an altered fireplace opening into the space now occupied by the outbuilding. A winder stair aligns with the central chimney.
