Description

No. 58 High Street is a house dating from the early to mid-16th century and early 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. It retains remnants of a medieval cruck house. The exterior features whitewashed render and roughcast over a timber frame, with a plinth and an old tile roof. There are brick chimneys located at the center and between the left bays. The house has two storeys, with the upper floor jettied at the front and a higher first floor in the third bay. It consists of four bays, with 18th-century leaded casements, including three-light windows on the first floor and in the second and fourth bays of the ground floor. The other ground floor bays feature canted bay windows, the rightmost of which has an 18th-century moulded plaster cornice.

The central entry is a lobby with a boarded door framed in an architrave, while the right bay contains a 20th-century half-glazed door set in a recess. There is another boarded door in a lean-to on the left, which has a boarded hood supported by shaped brackets. The rear of the house has 19th- to 20th-century lean-to extensions. A cruck blade is attached to the rear left-hand corner.

Inside, the third bay features a large fireplace with a moulded four-centred wooden lintel, moulded cross beams, an altered central truss with remnants of an arch-braced collar, and arched wind-braces. The left bays exhibit slightly later framing with curved wind-braces and three re-sited moulded stone fireplaces with four-centred arches.
