Description

The Old Cottage and Stone End are a pair of houses located on the west side of High Street in Whitchurch. The Old Cottage, numbered 41 and situated to the left, features a 16th to 17th century bay in the center, a late 17th to 18th century bay to the right, and a later bay to the left, all of which were altered in the early 20th century. This house is finished in whitewashed render with an old tile roof and has two intermediate brick chimneys. It is two stories tall with three bays, displaying irregular 20th century leaded casements. The ground floor includes a canted bay window on the left and a canted oriel in the center. The right bay has a two-storey canted projection that breaks through the eaves, topped with a small gable and features half-timbering with herringbone brick between the storeys. A 20th century door is set beneath a gabled timber porch between the right bays. Inside, some timber framing is preserved, including curved braces in the partition walls. The center bay, which was originally jettied at the front, has a heavy stop-chamfered spine beam and joists, an altered fireplace, and curved wind-braces.

Stone End, numbered 43 and located to the right, dates from the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed of colourwashed brick at the front, featuring a first-floor band course and a blackened rubble stone plinth, with the right gable made of coursed rubble stone. This house also has an old tile roof and a brick chimney on the right. It is two stories tall with a basement and consists of one bay, with three-light wooden casements on all floors and a boarded door on the right side. Both houses are included for their group value.
