Description

No. 6 Lady Gate is a house dating from the late 15th to early 16th century, with extensions from the 17th century, parts rebuilt in the 19th century, and refurbished in the mid-1980s. The original structure was timber-framed, featuring an exposed cruck truss in the left gable and post frame and truss in the right gable, with some timber-framing still visible in the rear wall of the right bays. The rest of the house has been rebuilt in brick. A new thatch roof was added in 1986. There is a rebuilt brick chimney shaft situated between the left bays, aligned with a semicircular rubble stone projection that contains an oven and faggot chamber. The house has one and a half storeys and consists of three bays. The 20th-century windows are three-light horizontal sashes, with three on the ground floor and two in eyebrow dormers on the first floor to the right. A flush-panelled door is located between the right bays. The oven projection features a small external rectangular opening for the faggot store. At the right end of the house, there is a later brick lean-to with a slate roof. Inside, there is another cruck truss between the left bays and a post truss between the right bays. The post trusses are made of rough wavy timbers with inset principals that are almost ogee in shape. The original purlins are present, with the one in the centre bay featuring a chamfered curved wind-brace. The chimney has altered fireplaces, with the left bay retaining the base of the firehood but with the upper part removed.
