Description

This is a former Baptist chapel, likely built around 1752, though potentially dating from the founding of the local Baptist Church in 1773. It was extended in 1824 to include a two-story school room and subsequently altered in 1875, 1928, and 1944. The chapel is constructed of brick on a rendered plinth, with the front and right gable finished with roughcast and colourwashed surfaces. It has dentil eaves and slate roofs, the front section using Swithland slates. The front elevation features two cross casement windows within raised and painted stone surrounds, with keyblocks. The leaded glazing is from around 1875, with each lower light featuring an ogee arch. A centrally located blocked door has a painted stone surround, label, and keyblock, bearing an inscribed frieze that reads "BAPTIST CHAPEL." To the right is the 1824 extension, incorporating a 20th-century wooden casement on the ground floor, an older three-light wooden casement above, and a wide-board door to the left, alongside a later lean-to. The rear of the building has similar window placement to the front, although the chapel windows are set within altered brick surrounds. The left gable includes a band course at eaves level, interrupted by two tall arched lights with leaded glazing. The interior is plain, featuring late 19th- and early 20th-century fittings. Hatches connect the chapel and school rooms at ground floor level, while the upper level exhibits early 19th-century sliding panelled shutters and wooden stick balusters.
