Description

The Nether Broughton War Memorial, built in 1920, is made of red Peterhead granite. It features a polished red granite wheel cross with floriated terminals at the ends of its arms, set on a collared, tapering square-sectioned shaft. This cross shaft is positioned above a slightly tapering square-sectioned pedestal, which has a moulded capstone that creates pediments on each face and a projecting foot. The pedestal rests on a two-tiered square base. The pedestal includes inscriptions in incised black lettering, which read: 1914 – 1918/ TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN HONOURED MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR./ (NAMES)/ "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT/ A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS."
