Description

The stone outbuilding immediately east of Welby Grange is a 19th-century structure that incorporates re-used stonework from the 17th century. It is built of coursed squared ironstone and has a Swithland slate roof. The long side facing Welby Grange features doors on the left and right of the center. The left door has a segmental-arched brick head, while the right door has a moulded Tudor-arched stone head with moulded stone jambs. To the right of the right-hand door, there is a small two-light window with an ovolo-moulded stone mullion, and similar moulding is found on the jambs and as the lintel. Above this, there is a small one-light window with moulded stone sill and jambs, and an opening to the left of the door has a moulded stone left jamb and lintel. A one-light window to the right of center also features moulded stone jambs, sill, and lintel. The central stonework includes the head of a large Tudor-arched stone fireplace, which has carved spandrels and a frieze decorated with pairs of flutes alternating with faceted bosses. The left gable end faces a yard and has a pair of kennel openings with brick jambs and wooden lintels. Above this, there is a dovecote with a one-light window in the gable featuring moulded stone jambs and a lintel. The gable also displays the traceried head of a medieval window, with quatrefoil and ogee-arched heads of former lights.
