Description
The building is a tower of a smock-mill, dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of perforated yellow brick in English bond, featuring a moulded stone cornice and red brick blockings for the windows, with the interior lined in red brick. The structure has a squat winter tower with a slight batter and a large moulded cornice at the top. The pointed arch windows have been blocked with red brick. There is a doorway on the north side with a depressed two-centred arch, and a blocked doorway on the southeast side. The superstructure has been dismantled, and many of the brick faces have eroded, revealing the perforations. The interior has had its machinery removed, and it contains chamfered softwood posts and beams with run-out stops. Half of the first floor and all of the second floor have been removed, leaving only the beams. There is also a narrow blocked segmental arch doorway on the southeast side. This windmill is noted to be the only known smock-mill in Leicestershire and Rutland. A windmill at this site is shown on an 1806 map, and it was likely in use until 1916 when the wooden superstructure was removed or destroyed.
