Description

Onion Cottage is a Grade II listed cottage located on the north-west side of The Mount in Dunton Bassett. This building dates back to the early 16th century and features a timber-framed structure that has been partially encased in later 18th-century materials. The timber-framed core is visible in the rear wall, consisting of six panels of post and truss construction raised on padstones, with two middle rails, although some have been removed. The brickwork between the timbers is complemented by a front elevation made of 19th-century brick, which retains a single vertical post centrally and a timber wall plate above. Both gables are constructed of 18th-century brickwork, and the thatched roof is covered with corrugated sheeting.

The cottage is one and a half storeys tall and was originally designed as a two-unit plan. The gable facing the street features a three-light casement window with a cambered brick head on each floor. The front elevation has a doorway to the right, accompanied by a three-light casement window beyond, both with cambered brick heads. The left-hand unit has been altered to create a garage, but an upper four-light casement window in an eyebrow dormer remains intact. There is an axial stack over a deep inglenook fireplace.

At the rear of the property, there is a range of brick farm buildings, likely constructed in the later 18th century, which runs parallel to the street. These buildings are built on a brick plinth and topped with Welsh slate roofs, featuring a blocked doorway on the street elevation and additional doorways at the rear.
