Description

Old Hall Cottage is a building that was originally three separate dwellings, arranged in a row at right angles to the street. The oldest part dates back to the 17th century, while the other sections are likely additions from the 18th to 19th centuries. The earliest unit features a timber frame that is partially rendered, likely with brick panel infill, and has a thatched roof. The later units are also rendered, probably over brick, and have low-pitched roofs covered with Welsh slate.

The original section is constructed using post and truss methods and has a two-unit plan, consisting of six panels long and three panels high, although some of the structural members are now covered with render. There is no visible sill beam above the granite plinth, and the building features straight arch bracing at angles and centrally. A lean-to porch has been added at ground floor level, with a two-light casement window on each floor beyond it. The gable includes curved arch braces and curved principals that cross at the apex, with queen struts below the collar and a king strut above it.

At the rear, there is a central doorway flanked by three-light casement windows, and an axial stack. The front elevation has a doorway located within a large modern gabled porch at the junction of the original unit and the lower later block. The later sections are designed as single-unit plans with gable end stacks, although one stack has been removed, and each of these parts features a single three-light casement window on each floor.
