10,12 AND 14, CHURCHGATE

10, 12, and 14 Churchgate are two houses that were formerly three separate dwellings. They likely date back to the late 16th century or 17th century and feature a rendered exterior over a partial timber frame with a thatched roof. The buildings are tall and consist of two storeys, originally comprising two single-unit cottages and one two-unit cottage.

No. 12 has a three-light wood mullioned and transomed casement window, with a doorway to the right beneath a common lintel, and an additional door and three-light casement window to the left. There are two upper two-light casement windows, one of which has tiny panes.

No. 14 is slightly taller and has a doorway to the right that leads to a canted ashlar bay window with three-light ovolo moulded mullions, along with two-light casement windows to the left. Above, there are paired two-light casements with a common lintel, one of which also has tiny panes. The gable wall of No. 12 features brickwork and a date stone from 1856 with the initials IHD, likely indicating later alterations. An angle post is partially visible in No. 14. Inside, No. 14 has ironstone flooring on the ground floor and close-studded timber work above, including a pair of finely carved principal posts with a crown motif at the top. Timber framing is also present in the gable wall of No. 12.
