Description

This is a mileplate located immediately west of bridge number 55 on the Grand Union Canal. It dates from the late 19th century to early 20th century and is made of cast iron. The front of the mileplate is inscribed with "CJC CO LEICESTER 20 MILES," while the back reads "LONDON AND LANCASHIRE ELECTRICAL AND GENL ENGINEERING CO LIMITED LONDON." The Grand Union Canal, which this mileplate is associated with, was engineered by Benjamin Bevan and completed in 1814.
