Description

The National Westminster Bank, built in 1886 by Fothergill Watson, is a bank located on the east side of Cattle Market. It features red brick construction with decorative terracotta and blue brick, along with stone dressings and bands. The building is designed in the "Arts and Crafts Gothic" style and consists of two storeys and an attic, topped with plain tile roofs and two richly moulded brick ridge stacks.

The windows are primarily plate glass sash windows, and the entrance on the left is canopied and supported by pairs of columns with richly moulded capitals, leading to a square tower with a pyramidal roof. Inside, the central banking hall is illuminated by three 2-light windows set within round heads, complete with transoms and cusped oculi, and is articulated by a gable above.

To the right, there is an eight-window range of offices, with first-floor windows linked by arcading and a parapet featuring miniature blind pointed arcading above. The building includes two hipped dormers with deep eaves supported by decorative brackets. The banking hall boasts a square panelled "Jacobethan" ceiling made of wood and plaster, held up by massive brackets. The upper part of the interior is finished with exposed brick down to a decorative terracotta stringcourse. The rear of the hall is lit by three 2-light windows with plain oculi, and there are twin brick arches in the north wall featuring a central polished grey granite column with a richly moulded capital.
