Description

The Midland Bank, located at No. 41 Market Place, is a bank building designed by Goddard Paget and Goddard of Leicester, constructed in 1893. It features a polished pink granite plinth and a Portland stone front, topped with Swithland slate roofs, and is designed in a "Mixed Renaissance" style. The building is three stories tall with a six-window range arranged in a 1-4-1 pattern, and has entrance projections on each side.

The main entrance, located to the left, includes a shallow distyle porch with part-fluted columns that support plaques dated 1829 and 1893. Similar columns are found between the first-floor windows of the central block and in pilaster form flanking the now-blocked subsidiary entrance on the right, which has a semi-circular window above, adorned with decorative finials. The first-floor columns support a "Free Ionic" entablature with finials above, while the second floor features a "Corinthian" order with shell-headed niches between the columns. The parapet is decorated with round-headed arches and keystones, topped with miniature obelisks.

The main block has three-light windows, while the entrance projections have two-light windows. The ground floor windows include two transoms, and the upper floors have one transom each. The lower panes of the windows are made of clear glass, while the upper panes feature decorative leading, except in five cases where they have been replaced with modern ventilators. The steep roofs are finished with decorative lead finials, hipped above the central block and pyramidal above the wings. The interior has been refitted and does not hold special architectural interest.
