Description
Fearon Fountain is a drinking fountain, dated 1870 above the north arch, which was restored in 1981. It is constructed from ashlar and features polished Aberdeen granite columns, with a late 19th-century cast-iron lamp above. The fountain has a square-based canopied structure on a rustic basement, raised on a plain plinth dated 1981. It is supported by squat columns with stylised foliage capitals and has cusped, round-headed arches, a bracketed cornice, and traceried gables, with the north gable displaying a shield of arms. There are polished marble basins on the north and south sides, and lions' heads on the east and west. An inscription reads, "Our common mercies/loudly call/for praise to God/who gave them all." A metal plaque on the west side notes, "The Fearon Fountain presented to the town by Archdeacon Fearon to mark the provision of Loughborough's first public water supply in 1870. Renovated as part of the Market Place enhancement 1981."
