Description

Carillon Tower is a war memorial tower built between 1922 and 1923 by Walter Tapper. It features a Portland stone basement and a brick tower with Portland stone dressings, topped by a copper bell-storey and lantern, all designed in a classical style. The west side has double doors that lead into a ground floor museum room, which is illuminated by square-headed windows on each face, along with a round-headed window above that has a lugged architrave and keystone, and leaded panes. Above this, there is another similar window, followed by an oculus and a small round-headed opening. The north face has unobtrusive rectangular windows that light the staircase located in the north-east corner, and small square recesses are scattered throughout the brickwork. The bell-storey is arcaded and balustraded, featuring an octagonal parapet and lantern, which is surmounted by a ball and cross. An inscription above the entrance reads, "This tower was erected in grateful memory of the men of Loughborough who gave their lives for freedom in the Great War 1914-1918." Bronze plaques recessed in the basement to the east and west record the names of the deceased, with additional names from World War II added to the south. The tower is enclosed by a square, paved, and balustraded area with wide openings on each side.
