Description
The Gate House is a house dating from the 16th or early 17th century, located on the south side of Causeway Lane in Thurcaston. It is constructed of granite and slate rubble stone, red brick, and timber framing, with a Swithland slate roof and end stacks. The stack on the right projects and has a double flue. The ground floor is stone, while the upper part is timber-framed across two bays. Square panels are filled with stone or brick nogging, some of the brickwork laid in a herringbone pattern. A central buttress is present. The front features 2½ storeys with a series of casement windows: 3-light, 1-light, 3-light over a 4-light, 1-light, and 3-light pattern. To the left is a door with overlight and a 1-light casement above a 2-light casement, within a gable which also has a tie beam truss with collar. The mostly rendered right end has a fixed light window with a 1-light casement above and a 2-light window in the gable. A 20th-century extension is visible to the right. A gabled, 2-storey wing extends to the rear, featuring a truncated stack and other extensions.
