Description

This is a former Congregational chapel hall, now used as a hall. It was originally built in 1822 and enlarged and altered in 1860, as indicated by a plaque on the front gable. The building is constructed of red brick with a slate roof. It features a gallery. The front gable, dating from 1860, has windows with cambered heads flanking a central porch, and three windows above, each with pairs of semicircular arched lights. The front windows are currently boarded up, but retain ornamental cast-iron glazing bars visible from inside. The central porch has arched double doors and blind arched side lights. A later chimney is located to the right. The right side of the building retains two tall, blind semicircular arches, likely from the original 1822 construction, with a two-light window to each storey; the lower windows have cambered heads and shutters, and retain cast-iron glazing bars. A rear block, set at a slight angle, has semicircular arched windows with cast-iron Y-tracery to the upper storey, and a shuttered window and arched door on the right side. Low extensions have been added to the rear gable. The interior includes a gallery with a panelled balustrade supported by iron columns, and an elaborate boarded ceiling with wooden rib ornament from the later 19th century. A 20th-century ceiling has been inserted to sit on top of the balustrade.
