Description
3 The Cross is a house built around 1820 to 1830, as noted in a will from 1834. It is constructed of brick with a rendered front that has been whitewashed. The building features boarded eaves supported by small wooden brackets and has a roof made of Swithland slate, with flanking brick chimneys. The house is designed in an L-shape, with the rear wing possibly added later. It has two storeys and a cellar, with three bays. The windows are flush 4-pane sashes, which are slightly shorter on the first floor. The central entrance has a six-panelled top-lit door set in a well-crafted wooden doorcase that includes moulded pilaster strips, a reeded lintel, a frieze, paterae, and a cornice hood supported by reeded brackets. The rear wing connects to a 20th-century conservatory, which leads to a later coalhouse and garden room. Inside, the right bay features a re-sited slate fireplace on the ground floor, complete with a reeded lintel and reeded pilasters with foliage capitals, which was originally located on the first floor. There is also another fireplace on the first floor with a reeded wooden surround.
