Description

This is a house, originally built around 1870 and later used as the schoolmaster’s residence. It is constructed from granite rubble with stone dressings, and has slate roofing with distinctive, elaborately carved wooden bargeboards featuring pierced geometric designs. The chimneys are also made of stone. The front of the building, facing Hall Walk, has two gabled sections, deliberately asymmetrical, with the right-hand bay being smaller and narrower than the left. The ground floor of each bay has a pair of sash windows set within chamfered stone surrounds, and each is topped with a granite relieving arch. The first floor on the left has a smaller pair of similar sash windows, with a trefoil design in a blind arch above each, linked by a four-centred arch containing a quatrefoil. The first floor on the right features an arched sash window. A central door is set within a stop-chamfered stone surround. Elaborate wrought-iron finials adorn both gables. The building is included on the heritage list due to its contribution to the wider group value of the area.
