Description
Deerleap Cottages is a pair of cottages that were originally six, built in the 18th century and partly altered in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with gritstone dressings and quoins, featuring a stone slate roof on the south side and a combination of slate and stone slates at the eaves on the north side. It has stone gable end stacks with moulded cornices, as well as similar stacks on the south ridge and in the central valley.
The cottages are two storeys high and have a three-bay layout, with a double pile plan that consists of back-to-back cottages, previously three on the north and three on the south. The south elevation displays three-light flush mullion windows at either end, with the western window featuring 19th-century casements and the southern window retaining original leaded lights on the sides and a central glazing bar sash. The central section has a two-light flush mullion window, with a leaded light on the eastern side and a glazing bar sash on the western side. There are two adjoining flush quoined doorcases with 20th-century plank doors to the west and a similar doorcase with an 18th-century panelled door to the east of the central window. Above, there are three-light flush mullion windows at either end, both with 19th-century casements, and a similar central window with the western light now blocked. Blocked single light windows are located on either side.
The north elevation features a quoined flush doorcase with a plain door to the east and a glazing bar sash in a flush surround to the west, along with a smaller sash beyond. There is another quoined flush doorcase with a glazing bar sash further to the west. Above, there are three-light flush mullion windows at either end, with the eastern lights blocked, and a single light central window. The east facade includes a partly blocked Venetian window on the ground floor.
