Description
Handley House is a farmhouse, now a house, built in 1723 with additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with gritstone dressings and quoins, topped with a slate roof. It features moulded stone coped gables with plain kneelers and has brick gable end and ridge stacks, along with a coved eaves band. The house has three storeys and three bays. A projecting gabled stone porch, added in 1910, includes a chamfered quoined doorcase and a re-used lintel inscribed with 'HIM 1679'. The inner door features a moulded architrave and a 20th-century studded wooden door.
On the east side, there is a 19th-century window in a flush surround, while the west side has a 20th-century three-light flush mullion window with inserted masonry. Beyond this, there is an original three-light flush mullion window. The upper storey has three two-light flush mullion windows, and a third storey was added above with three casement windows in flush surrounds. Most of the windows have 20th-century leaded lights, except for the eastern ground floor window. A datestone on the rear gable is inscribed 'HIN 1723'.
Attached to the front of the house is a gritstone rubble wall with rounded copings that curves upwards to the east and west. To the west, there are early 20th-century rusticated square gate piers with plain bases, heavily moulded cornices, and large ball finials on top.
