Description
Handley Lodge Farmhouse, along with its attached outbuildings and garden wall, is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house, originally built in the mid 18th century with 19th-century alterations to the outbuildings. It underwent a complete renovation in the late 1970s. The farmhouse is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with gritstone dressings, while the outbuildings are made of sandstone rubble with sandstone dressings. The roofs are slate with stone ridges, and the gables are stone-coped, featuring moulded kneelers on the house and plain kneelers on the barn.
The structure is two storeys high, except for the single-storey cowshed. The layout forms three sides of a square, with the house on the north, the barn on the east, and the cowshed on the south. The house consists of three bays, the barn has roughly six bays, and the cowshed has three bays. The house features a central doorcase with flush quoining and a 20th-century panelled door. On either side of the door are three-light flush mullion windows, with two similar windows above and a central single-light window over the door. There is also a mullion and transom stair window at the rear.
A rubble wall curves to the east and is attached to the front of the farmhouse. The barn is linked to the east by a two-bay building that has small windows from former breathers and two 20th-century doors. There are steps leading up to a first-floor door on the north side, and a central doorcase with glazed breathers on the sides. The east facade of the barn has been significantly altered, with a central full-height arch now filled in with windows. To the north, there is a 20th-century window and double doors, while to the south, there are two similar doors and a 20th-century window. Above these, three small semi-circular windows are located to the north, and a 20th-century two-light flush mullion window is found to the south. The south facade of the cowshed features 20th-century windows on either side of a former doorcase, which is now filled by a 20th-century window.
