Description
Bowden Hall is a house built around 1844, designed by architect Richard Lane from Manchester. The building is constructed of gritstone ashlar and features slate roofs with leaded ridges, along with elaborately banded and chamfered stone side walls and ridge stacks. The gables are topped with moulded stone coping.
The house is two storeys high, plus attics, and has three bays in the Tudor Gothic style. The south elevation showcases a double-gabled facade with a central two-storey gabled porch that projects forward. The porch contains a four-centred arched doorcase with a deeply chamfered surround and a moulded dripmould above that extends to the sides, forming a stringcourse. Inside the porch, there is a quadripartite vault featuring a central foliate boss. The inner doorcase mirrors the outer one, with glazed double doors that have cusped tracery panels and a fanlight above, also with similar tracery.
To the east of the porch, there is a tripartite window with margin light sashes and a dripmould above. To the west, a canted bay window features similar sashes on three sides. The low parapet wall above has moulded copings. In the porch, there is a four-centred arched, two-light window with a dripmould and margin-light sashes. There is a flat-headed window to the east and two similar windows to the west. The east gable has a blank plaque, while the west gable features a single light window. A later extension in a sympathetic style is located at the extreme east.
The interior maintains the same architectural style, featuring a cast iron staircase with cusped balusters and a fireplace with a four-centred arch and cusped panels on the sides.
