Description

This is a stable block dating from the early 19th century, located on the south side of Bowden Lane in Chapel-en-le-Frith. The building is constructed of coursed, squared gritstone with ashlar dressings and rusticated quoins. It has a hipped slate roof with leaded side ridges and a stone top ridge, featuring stone ridge stacks with decorative bands. A distinctive off-centre bellcote tops the building, with a domed top and a ball and steeple finial supported by four thin wooden posts. The structure is three storeys high and based on an L-shaped plan with a five-bay arrangement.

The west elevation has a four-window range, with an advanced northern bay. The main range's blocked rectangular openings contain inset semi-ovoid windows, with small panes of glass. A high doorcase with a quoin surround stands between the southernmost windows, containing a plank door and a plain fanlight above. A smaller, similar door is positioned between the northernmost windows. A set of double plank doors are placed in a segmentally headed arch slightly off-centre. Four partly blind openings rise above the windows, with small paned fixed windows at the top, except one which has a glazed door. Above these, four smaller paned windows are visible. A centrally placed clock face, set within a chamfered stone surround, is located just below the eaves. The northern bay’s west wall is blank. A significant quantity of original bottle glass remains within the windows.
