Description
The Smithy is a former outbuilding dating from the 18th century, located on the south side of Bowden Lane in Chapel-en-le-Frith. It is constructed of coursed gritstone rubble with quoins and features a hipped stone slate roof with stone ridges. A central stone ridge stack is adorned with decorative bands. The building is two storeys high and has two bays.
The west elevation facing the road has two three-light recessed and chamfered windows with mullions and transoms. Above these are two low three-light recessed and chamfered mullion windows with leaded lights. The east elevation includes two doorcases with large flush jambs, lintels, and imposts, leading to plank doors. A cantilevered stone staircase provides access to a central door above, which also has a plank door.
Inside, the ground floor features ovolo moulded beams and remains of bread ovens, while most of the roof timbers date from the 20th century.
