Description

The Methodist Chapel, dated 1782, is constructed from coursed squared gritstone with gritstone dressings and quoins. It features stone coped gables adorned with various finials, and the roof is hidden from view. Gutter corbels are present on the side walls.

This single-storey chapel has a three-bay front and sides. The north elevation, which faces the street, includes an early 20th-century central stone gabled porch. On either side of the porch are rusticated semi-circular headed windows, featuring c1920 leaded lights with stained glass. Above the porch is a central Venetian window with a plaque inscribed 'Wesleyan Chapel / Erected AD 1782'. Flanking this window are two lower semi-circular headed windows with projecting sills, imposts, and keystones. The side elevations also have three similar windows below a stringcourse band, with three additional similar windows above.

Inside, the chapel boasts panelled wooden galleries on all four sides, supported by plain columns with foliage capitals. Box pews are found throughout the space. A depressed arch with pilasters leads to the eastern organ bay, which features a high panelled wooden pulpit with stairs to one side, set against the eastern gallery. The lower windows contain late 19th-century stained glass, including a copy of Rossetti's 'Light of the World'. The chapel was opened by John Wesley in 1782.
