Description
Lower Courses Farmhouse and Barn is a farmhouse with an attached barn, dating from the 17th century, with alterations from the 18th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed gritstone rubble, featuring gritstone dressings and quoins, and has a stone slate roof with a single stone ridge stack. It is two storeys tall, plus attics, and has an L-plan layout, with a single bay main elevation, while the barn and part of the house form the other range.
On the south elevation, there is a western gabled bay that contains a 3-light recessed and chamfered mullion window, which was formerly a 6-light window. To the east of this window, there is a plank door with a continuous dripmould above it. Above the door, there is a similar window that is now a 3-light window but was originally a 5-light window. In the gable above, there is a 2-light window of the same style. The fenestration is primarily from the 20th century, with some small paned casements and others with single panes. Recessed to the east is a 20th-century porch with a 20th-century casement window above it. Further east, the barn features a single door and an adjacent window.
The east elevation has a 3-light recessed and chamfered mullion window, which was formerly a 5-light window, with a continuous dripmould above it. Above this, there is a similar window that was originally a 4-light window. The western elevation has four 18th-century flush mullion windows. Inside, the building features ovolo moulded beams, a large voussoired arched fireplace, and a heavily moulded beam over a large ground floor window.
