16 and 18, Church Street South

Two houses, 16 and 18 Church Street South, date to the early 17th century, with alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed of narrow coursed millstone grit with ashlar dressings and have stone slate roofs and three stone stacks, one diagonally set on number 18.

Number 16 originally had a T-plan layout with a cross passage, later altered to a baffle entry. Number 18 has an L-plan. The east gable front of number 16 features a single narrow 16-pane window above a 3-light 20th-century casement window, both with timber and ashlar lintels respectively. A 2-storey lean-to wing is set back to the right, with a 20th-century door in an ashlar surround and a single 2-light casement above, in a chamfered surround. The north front is largely blank, with two 6-pane casements to the left, the one to the right set within a former door opening. Above is a single casement in a chamfered surround. A projecting crosswing to the left has a doorway and a casement above, also with a chamfered surround. The right return has a 2-light chamfered mullion window and a smaller 2-light flush mullion window above. The west front has a projecting crosswing with a coped gable and kneelers, housing a 7-light chamfered mullion window below a 5-light similar window. The left return has an external stack, a doorway, and a 3-light chamfered mullion window to the first floor right. A further single 3-light chamfered mullion window is set back on each floor. The south front has a gable to the right and a projecting lean-to to the left. An off-centre doorway has a 20th-century plank and studded door, with a 3-light casement above. The lean-to has a 3-light casement in a chamfered ashlar surround. The gable to the right has 20th-century casements.

The roof space of number 16 contains timber and wattle-and-daub remains of a former cross passage, including a tie with mortices for a smoke hood or timber stack. Smoke-blackened timbers and wall plaster are also evident. The fireplace has a large cambered stone lintel. Beams remain throughout, and the first floor retains timber lintels to window openings. Traces of previous stone mullions, forming a former 4-light window, are visible in the south wall. Number 18 has chamfered beams to the main rooms, supported by stone corbels, and a replacement fireplace to the principal room.
