Description
14 Church Street South is a house located in Old Glossop, dating from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed from narrow coursed millstone grit with ashlar dressings and features stone slate roofs along with four end stacks that have coping and watertabling.
The house is two storeys high and has a regular two-window arrangement on the street front. The central doorway contains a 20th-century door set in a painted flush ashlar surround, flanked by pairs of plain horned sash windows in flush ashlar surrounds. Above, there are two three-light flush mullion windows, with the left window featuring a central casement and the right window having a central horned sash, both positioned at eaves level.
On the left side of the building, there is a single-storey lean-to addition, with a single two-light glazing bar sliding sash window above it. The rear elevation also has a two-window range, with a central doorway. To the left of this doorway is a low two-light glazing bar casement window leading to the dairy, and to the right is an enlarged 20th-century casement window. Above, there are two two-light flush mullion windows with glazing bar casements.
Inside, the house features stone flag floors in the service rooms, a deep window seat in the kitchen, and a single beam supported on a stone corbel. The dairy has a stone sett floor, and the principal room includes ceiling beams. Some original planked doors are still present.
