Description

The Market Cross is likely from the 15th century and was restored in the 20th century. Constructed from millstone grit, it comprises an octagonal shaft with pyramid stops on a moulded base and a squared plinth. The shaft rises to a moulded cap and is topped with a 20th-century Celtic cross. The cross was originally positioned adjacent to number 16 Church Street South and was moved from that location. A market charter was granted in 1290.
