Description

28, 28A and 30 Church Street South is a farmhouse that has been converted into three cottages. It dates from the late 17th century and late 18th century, with some alterations and an addition made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of narrow coursed millstone grit with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof with coped gables and kneelers. There are stone ridge stacks with watertabling.

The plan consists of a baffle-entry two-unit range with a rear service wing and a two-unit cross wing to the right. The exterior is two storeys high and has quoins. The front facing Church Street has an irregular arrangement of three windows, with a gable end to the right. There is an original off-centre doorway that is now blocked, featuring a massive stone lintel. To the left, there is a doorway in a flush ashlar surround, leading to a single three-light casement window in a similar surround. To the right, there is a single two-light casement, a single doorway in a flush ashlar surround, and beyond that, a three-light chamfered mullion window with a tiny central sash. Above, to the left, is a single three-light mullion window in a flush ashlar surround, and to the right, a single four-light chamfered mullion window, with another four-light chamfered mullion window in the gable.

The right return to Old Cross has a regular two-window range. There is a doorway to the right with a 20th-century door, and to the left, two 20th-century casements in ashlar surrounds, with two three-light chamfered mullioned windows above. There is a 20th-century single-storey lean-to on the right with a single 20th-century casement.

At the rear, the gabled wing to the right has a chamfered stone door surround and a single three-light chamfered mullion window on each floor of the end wall. The rest of the fenestration has been altered in the 20th century. The interior has not been inspected.
