Description

22 and 22A Church Street South are two former weavers' cottages, now functioning as two houses. They date from the mid-18th century and have undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed of narrow coursed millstone grit with tooled ashlar dressings. The main range has a synthetic tiled roof, while the rear wing features Welsh and stone slate roofs. The end stacks are designed with weathering.

The exterior consists of three storeys with a single-storey rear wing that may have originally served as a loom shop. The street-facing side has a regular arrangement of three windows. There is a central doorway with a flush ashlar surround and a 20th-century door, along with a similar doorway to the right that has a glazed 20th-century door. To the left, there is a small fixed window. On the right, a single three-light flush mullion window with a central sash is present, while to the left, there is a three-light 20th-century casement window in a flush ashlar surround, beyond which is a blocked doorway in a flush ashlar surround. Above the central doorway, there is a 20th-century casement window in a similar surround, with a single three-light flush mullion window with a central sash to the right and a three-light mullion window with 20th-century casements to the left. This window arrangement continues above at eaves level.

Both end walls of the cottages are rendered, and there is a 20th-century extension to the right. The rear wing, which is also rendered, has some windows in their original openings and a blocked taking-in door at eaves level at the rear of the main range, along with some minor 20th-century extensions.

Inside No. 22A, the interior retains a cast-iron fireplace with cupboards on either side, ceiling beams, and a stone flag floor in the principal room.
