Description

The Northern Glass Works, located on Manor Park Road in Old Glossop, is a former Wesleyan Chapel that has been converted into an industrial unit. It was built in 1836, although the datestone is currently obscured by a sign. The building is constructed from squared and coursed watershot millstone grit, featuring ashlar door and window surrounds and a slate roof.

The exterior is a single storey with three bays. It has two round-headed raised windows, each set in round-headed surrounds with keystones and brackets at the imposts. These flank a central double door that has a plain fanlight and a similar surround. The eaves are supported by console-shaped corbels. The left and right elevations each have two windows with six panes and flat lintels. There are 20th-century extensions added to the side and rear of the building.

Internally, no significant features remain. The entrance front is adorned with attached spear-headed iron railings on a low plinth wall, which includes four piers topped with pyramidal caps. The side wall has coping and a square-headed cap with chamfered corners. The building was originally listed with the premises occupied by Helme Footwear, which was formerly known as the Tabernacle Chapel.
