Description
The building formerly known as the Tabernacle chapel, now occupied by Helme Footwear, dates back to 1860 and has had 20th-century extensions. The front elevation is made of ashlar gritstone, featuring chiselled and draughted margins, while the side elevations are constructed of watershot masonry. The roof is slate.
The structure has a simple rectangular plan with galleries that are now floored. The exterior is symmetrical with three bays. The gable wall has coping at the eaves and a stone finial, along with a small semi-circular opening above a plaque dated 1860. It features cornice bands and rusticated quoining. On the first floor, there are three tall round-headed windows with 16 panes, set in ashlar stone surrounds with recessed aprons above a sill band. The ground floor has a low plinth with two round-headed doorways, each with blocked fanlights, flanking a central round-headed blocked window, all having panelled ashlar surrounds. The doors are fielded and panelled.
The side elevation displays a regular four-window range with plain lintels on both the first and ground floors, although the east window is blocked on the left elevation.
Inside, the ground floor retains much of its Art Nouveau stained glass, cast-iron columns, and flagged floor, but only one of the two original staircases remains. This staircase, located at the extreme right of the main entrance, ascends in two flights to the upper floor, which is now used for storage. Elaborate ceiling roses and stucco cornices are also present.
The building was originally listed with an earlier chapel to the north, now known as the Northern Glass Works, which has attached walls and railings.
