Description
The Old Farmhouse is a late 18th-century farmhouse that was remodeled in the mid-19th century and has had some 20th-century alterations, including a replacement slate roof. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone with painted stone dressings, chamfered quoins, and features stone gable end stacks.
The building has an L-shaped plan, with its main facade facing southeast. The southeast elevation is two stories high and has three bays, presenting a double-fronted appearance. It features a central semi-circular headed doorcase with a moulded architrave, a fluted bracket-like keystone, and moulded imposts. The door itself has raised and fielded panels, and above it is a fanlight with radiating tracery. On either side of the doorway are painted stone window surrounds, which originally held glazing bar sashes but now have 20th-century replacement frames with top-hung lights. The upper floor contains three window openings with frames that match the design of those below. The rear elevation includes a single flush-mullioned window dating from the 18th century.
The Old Farmhouse is recognized for being a largely intact example of a stone-built farmhouse within a small agricultural hamlet in the uplands of Derbyshire, enhanced with a more fashionable facade in the mid-19th century.
