Description

This barn, located at Spire Hollins Farmhouse near Town of Chapel-en-le-Frith, was built in the early 18th century and has undergone several alterations since. It is constructed of coursed gritstone with prominent quoins, and has a stone slate roof with a catslide extending northwards over outshuts. The south facade features a chamfered doorcase with large quoins, topped with a flat stone hood supported by two tapering octagonal columns. Regular ventilation slits are present throughout the facade above the doorcase. A hayloft door is positioned above and to the east. The north facade includes a single bay outshut to the west with a flush doorcase, a recessed bay to the east with full-height double plank doors leading to a flagged threshing area, and two further bays of outshuts, each with flush-surround doors. The interior contains three queen strut trusses with collar ties, and a dividing wall to the easternmost bay. The north walls have a stone base with blocked niches, supported by stone piers with later brick infill. A large door features an oak lintel and jambs set on stone bases.
