Description
Carsington and Hopton Primary School is a school building dating from 1726, which has been significantly restored in the 20th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with gritstone dressing and features a hipped roof covered with graduated slate and leaded ridges. The building has elaborate stone end wall stacks that are rendered, and a moulded stone eaves cornice. It is a single-storey structure with a T-plan layout and includes a 20th-century rear extension.
The north elevation has a shallow plinth and five tall, flush mullioned and transomed windows, which have 20th-century casements. On the west wall, there is a plaque with a carved coat of arms that reads, "This School was Built and Given by Mrs Temperance Gell of Hopton for Twenty Poor Children of Hopton and Carson, to Learn to Read, Write, and other proper Works. Anno Dom: 1726."
