Description
The Church of St Margaret is a Grade II* listed building, constructed in 1648, with a 19th-century porch. It is built from limestone ashlar with gritstone dressings and features a slate roof behind an embattled stone parapet. The south porch is made of dressed gritstone, has a slate roof and stone coped gables, and is topped with a cross. The church is a rectangular single cell structure with three bays, a projecting south porch, and a north vestry at the west end.
The south facade includes a shallow plinth, two angle buttresses, and one intermediate five-stepped buttress that reaches the parapet level. It has two flat-headed tripartite windows with cusping and a sundial set into the wall inscribed 'Re-edified 1648'. Above this is a stringcourse. The porch features a two-light ogee window and a pointed moulded arch, leading to an inner arched studded door. The west gable wall has another stepped buttress, a two-light square-headed window with segment-headed lights, and a bellcote at the ridge. The north wall mirrors the south but lacks buttresses. The east wall showcases a three-light window with intersecting tracery and a shallow relieving arch above.
Inside, the nave and chancel are combined into one space. There is a wooden gallery at the west end supported by three fluted pilasters, which are between raised and fielded panels resting on a moulded beam inscribed 'This loft was erected at the onely charge of S Philip Gell, Baronet. Anno Domini 1704 by consent: of the parish at a meeting in Carsington: for the use of his tenants in Hopton'. The nave features panelling to dado height and a 19th-century king-post roof. The three eastern windows contain early 20th-century stained glass, and there is a painted coat of arms dated 1706. Additionally, there is a stone font with an octagonal raised and fielded cover topped with a finial.
